'They tried with all their hearts' Family of West Pasco's only known flood victim thanks
neighbors
By Robert Hibbs
Pasco Bureau Chief
When Bertha Grantham, the only known West Pasco drowning victim during the March
13 flood, was laid to rest, her neighbors weren't at the funeral because they didn't know
when the rite was being held.
Now, members of Grantham's family are concerned the late woman's neighbors think
that are somehow being blamed for the 87-year-old widow's death, according to Susan
Lerch, her granddaughter.
That couldn't be further from the truth, Lerch said Wednesday.
"They tried with all their hearts to help her," Lerch said in a telephone interview from her
home in Lakeworth in Palm Beach County, referring to the neighbors around Grantham's
home on Guava Street in Hudson Beach Estates.
The reason Grantham's neighbors didn't know about her March 17 funeral and burial at
County Line Road Cemetary in Lutz was the funeral home handling the arrangements
failed to have notice of the rite published, according to Lerch.
Grantham was laid to rest next to her husband Carl and son Lanny, Lerch's father, she
said.
"I felt terrible" when she learned Grantham's neighbors were not aware of the
funeral.
Grantham, a resident of Hudson for 21 years, is considered the only person to have
drowned in the flooding that washed over West Pasco in the early hours of March 13.
Two other people died of heart attacks that could have been related to the flooding,
according to authorities.
Lerch attributed Grantham's death to her refusal to evacuate when urged to do so by her
neighbors because she did not want to leave her valuables unprotected.
"She was one feisty woman," Lerch said of her grandmother.
Soon after several feet of flood water washed over Guava Street in the early hours of
March 13, Grantham's neighbors found her floating along the street, Lerch said. They
tried to revive her and then transported her to U.S. 19, where an emergency medical crew
took over.
Grantham was transported to the emergency room at HCA Bayonet Point-Hudson
Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:45 a.m., according to the Sheriff's
Office.
Grantham's neighbors had taken good care of the widow for years and shouldn't second
guess their actions of March 13, Lerch said.
"There was just nothing they could do," she said.

Safely Home
I am home in heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in heaven at last.
There is work still waiting for you.
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth Ð
You shall rest in God's own land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Afterglow
I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one,
I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is gone.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times, and laughing times, and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun,
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

A Prayer For Those Who Live Alone
I live alone, dear Lord,
Stay by my side,
In all my daily needs,
Be Thou my guide.
Grant me good health,
For that indeed, I pray,
To carry on my work
From day to day.
Keep pure my mind,
My thoughts, my every deed,
Let me be kind, unselfish
In my neighbor's need.
Spare me from fire, from flood,
Malicious tongues,
From thieves, from fear,
And evil ones.
If sickness or an accident befall,
Then humbly, Lord, I pray,
Hear Thou my call.
And when I'm feeling low,
Or in despair,
Lift up my heart,
And help me in my prayer.
I live alone, dear Lord,
Yet have no fear,
Because I feel Your Presence
Ever near. Amen.

The Hymn of Comfort (At the Grave)
1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood
From the riven side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.
2. Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfil Thy Law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow.
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
3. Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly --
Wash me, Savior, or I die!
4. While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee! Amen.

The Twenty Third Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters,
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the
paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me, thy rod and
thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the
presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow
me all the days of my life;
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

"Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled"
Whenever I am troubled and lost in deep despair
I bundle all my troubles up and go to God in prayer.
I tell Him I am heartsick and lost and lonely too,
That my mind is deeply burdened and I don't know what to do É
But I know He stilled the tempest and calmed the angry sea
And I humbly ask if in his lore He'll do the same for me
And then I just keep Quiet and think only thoughts of Peace.
And if I abide in stillness my restless murmurings cease.
