Orphanages appeared in large numbers in the early 1800s as part of an increase in American benevolent societies and aid organizations. By 1900 there were hundreds of institutions operated by local governments, religious denominations, and private charities. This presentation will provide an overview of such institutions, what records may be available and how to locate them along with the children’s likely experiences.
